Jane LeCroy has pointed out how teeth are interesting because it is the only place on our bodies where you can actually see our bones. You know, things like this just shouldn't work -- humans have this giant gaping hole in their bodies. The world being such a hostile environment, having a huge raw opening like that seems like a terrible idea. I guess that in the end there really is no true boundary between our bodies and our environments.

Every time I see the word "ick" now I think of the bit from Thomas Pynchon's book The Crying Of Lot 49 where the protagonist goes to see a play. After a scene that closes with a person running around the stage with someone else's flaming tongue on the end of a stick (or was it a sword), a person in the audience comments: "ick." I've always liked that line.

For some reason I have a feeling that my friend Scott Teplin is going to enjoy this week's episode.
